However, we also have a responsibility to ensure we source sustainable wood - simply put, a tree harvested replaced by another tree. We have engaged the Rainforest Alliance to certify our chain of custody through the Forest Stewardship Council - from timber mills, through to manufacturer, and onwards to our customers. The environmental advantages of using timber are simply undone if sourced from unsustainable sources.

Our timber of choice is European redwood. Firstly it is stable, mature timber and secondly it is a wood type that is in plentiful supply and whose population is growing. Although we use hardwood, albeit in minimal quantities, we are committed to continually reducing our use of hardwoods to zero.

Timber frames and cills

Our frames are manufactured exclusively from engineered softwood; this means not only that the timber is laminated for strength and stability, but also that there is minimum wastage from the joinery process.

Our cills are made from Meranti (Shorea), a hardwood sourced from the South East Asia. Although the majority of this family are rare, we use a sub species which is again in plentiful supply.

Our standard cill is 85mm, although smaller and larger variations are available.

All timber is treated with preservative prior to painting; our preservation treatments are guaranteed for a period of 30 years, in line with the membership guidelines of the Wood Window Alliance.  Please see our terms and conditions for further information.

We are continually researching potential alternative materials, as part of our program to eradicate the use of hardwoods entirely.

Glazing

Our standard double glazed units (DGU) are an attractive 16mm thick unit incorporating an 8 mm ‘warm edge’ spacer in a dark grey colour, manufactured by St Gobain’s Swisspacer. The units are argon filled, tested to BS EN 1279 and have a maximum tested u-value of 1.3.

Paint

Our windows are primed, then factory finished with two coats of Teknos microporous pure white (RAL9010) as standard. Microporous paint allows the timber to breathe throughout its lifetime, which is essential to ensure that water does not sit within it (leading to rot). Other paint colours and stains are also available.

Our guarantees for factory-applied coatings are for a period of 8 years for paints and 5 years for stains. Please see our terms and conditions for further information.

Weatherseals

The weatherseals we use comply with British Standards. In line with the membership guidelines of the Wood Window Alliance our guarantees on weather seals are for a period of 10 years. Please see our terms and conditions for further information.

Security

All our windows and doors are fitted with insurance approved locks as standard. Both locking systems and glazing can be upgraded to meet specialised security requirements.

Our guarantees and practices are in line with those laid down by the Wood Window Alliance, part of the British woodworking federation, guaranteeing excellence in the supply of timber windows.
